Set up SMTP

Enable Debug email sending

Enable jabber message output

Login as a user

Open the messaging dropdown and hit settings

Set email for online and offline in Personal messages between users

Turn on jabber (configure your jabber username using the settings cog at the top of the table)

Send a message from another user to that user

Make sure the message sends and you can straight away type a new message
