In Dutch, the surname is frequently preceded by a prefix (e.g. Jim de Zand, or Kim van ** Groot). Prefixes also occur in German, Scottish, Irish and Spanish languages. Concatenating the prefix and surname is not a good solution, because when sorting alphabetically in Dutch, what matters is the name behind the prefix, not the prefix. So correctly sorting the above example would be:
Kim van Groot
Jim de Zand
Most databases containing Dutch names therefore record prefixes seperately. It would be desirable to have a seperate profile field "Surname prefix(es)". This way, third parties that communicate with Moodle through a webservice for example, will always use that standard Moodle field. Without that standard field, every third party can create their own solution, probably resulting in slighty differently named fields for the same cause.
