Jake's comment in MDL-58899 made me think... why don't we just have print_error redirect to $link (or /) and use the notification system to display the error instead of throwing an unpleasant exception.

We'd need to try and detect redirect loops ($currenturl == $link) but otherwise should be a relatively simple change with a nice benefit.
