Fix Version/s: None
Affected Branches:MOODLE_33_STABLE, MOODLE_34_STABLE
- Bring back the old "modeditingmenu" setting AND/OR
- Make it possible to customize which icons are shown outside of the action dropdown menu
Most of our users preferred the old Moodle layout where it was possible to deactivate the edit dropdown menu and instead show icons for frequently used actions next to all activities when edit mode was turned on. (setting "modeditingmenu")
Unfortunately, the admin setting that allowed for this has been removed around Moodle 3.2 (https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-55904) for reasons I never understood, and with the incredibly arrogant claim that "no one uses them or even knows they exist"
Tell this to our teachers! - I still get complaints from teachers about this, even after running Moodle 3+ for almost a year! In fact, this is the main complaint about Boost that I get.
Sadly, requiring ever more clicks for the same actions has been a constant development for the Moodle interface, and it is one of the main reasons that Boost is such a disappointment.
If you really want action menus to be mandatory, fine. But at least let us configure which icons are shown outside of the menus. Right now, the only icon always shown is the group mode edit icon, which makes no sense at all. I regularly get calls from teachers with issues that can be tracked down to accidentaly changing the group mode for an activity. No wonder - it only requires one single click 1mm to the right of the action dropdown menu, which they have to click constantly in order to do anything in their course.
Both of these problems could be solved if it was an option to display the "edit settings" icon for the current activity outside the action menu instead of the group mode selection icon.
