THIS IS AN MUA PROJECT PROPOSAL THAT WILL BE OR HAS BEEN SUBMITTED FOR POSSIBLE MUA FUNDING. ANY EXISTING TRACKER ITEMS THAT THIS MIGHT DUPLICATE SHOULD BE LINKED TO BELOW.
Moodle's Quiz activity "Each attempt builds on last" option currently allows students to answer and re-answer questions until every one is correct. However, essay questions are poorly handled. This behaviour is a major part of some competency-based-training methodologies.
Currently, such questions are often asked through the Assignment activity. This requires much download and uploading, and skills with third-party software. However, it would be much more efficient to ask and answer these questions with the Quiz activity.
- Project size: small
- Audience: competency based training organisations
- Target users: teachers, students
For each attempt of a quiz after the first one, have one or more options that:
1. Shows on the student's attempt screen which questions they are yet to get correct.
2. Shows on the student's attempt screen what feedback teachers have given them about their last answer to a question.
3. Gives teachers the ability to stop students editing correctly answered questions in subsequent Quiz attempts.
4. Gives students the ability to hide or show all correctly answered questions when completing a Quiz. (Optional).
As a teacher, I should be able to set essay questions for students, and if they don't get 100% right the first time, they should be able to submit corrections for the incorrect answers until all questions are correctly answered. I should also be able to stop them editing answers they've already got correct.
As a student, I should be able to complete essay questions online rather than having to download a Word document, fill it out and upload it again for each submission. When completing essay questions using the Quiz activity, I should be able to easily see which answers my teacher has already marked as correct, and what feedback they're provided on questions I haven't got right yet.

The existing review attempt screen contains nearly all the necessary elements for the proposed student experience. All that is needed is for students to be able to change the answers if incorrect.
In the image below, a correct answer has been given reduced prominence through tinting. Other means could be used to focus students on questions that still need attention.
The strong similarity between the proposed attempt screen and the current review attempt screen should reduce development time considerably.
