Navigate to Site administration -> Server -> Environment

Select Moodle 4.0

Find the "Other checks" section

Confirm that there is no mention of a failed admin check for admin_dir_usage

Edit the config.php and set $CFG->admin = 'altadmin';

Symlink the admin directory to altadmin:

ln -s admin altadmin

Refresh the environment check

Confirm that the admin check for admin_dir_usage fails and has a warning advising that you are using a custom admin directory which will be deprecated

As discussed, voted, and agreed in ~~MDL-72194~~, the configurable $CFG->admin path feature will be deprecated from Moodle 4.0.
