Download a freely available PDF file somewhere, remember the address. E.g. https://pdfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/PDF-Basics-CheatSheet.pdf and have it then available as PDF-Basics-CheatSheet.pdf on your device.

As teacher, in a course, activate edit mode and add a URL with the link to https://pdfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/PDF-Basics-CheatSheet.pdf and title "URL"

In the same course drag and drop the PDF-Basics-CheatSheet.pdf file.

Verify both resources have the PDF MIME filetype icon.

With ~~MDL-78285~~ the currently missing display of the resource mime icons will be fixed starting in Moodle 4.4, which only will be released at the end of April next year. Since it is a frequently requested feature, the fix should be backported to all current stable versions (4.1, 4.2, 4.3).
