If a student submits an attempt after the grace period is over, when configured like 'There is a grace period when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered', then there is an error message 'This attempt has already been finished':

I think this can be quite confusing for the student. Maybe disable the submit button after the grace period, or at least take into account this account and provide more information
