Hello everyone,

since M3.4, teachers with the capability Override activity completion status could  «…mark activities complete or incomplete on behalf of students, via the Activity completion report.»

Completion status overridden by the teacher is shown with a red border in the Activity completion report so you can tell the difference.

In M<3.11 students could identify those completion status changes made by teachers because checkboxes were displayed with a red border also in the course. But in Moodle 4.4 there is no way students could know a particular activity completion status has been modified by the teacher.

The easiest way to test this is in the Site Demo Mount Orange School.

What to do:

1. Login as Student at Site Demo Mount Orange School:

• Enter the course: Cross-cultural Communication.
• Go to the section: Navigating communication styles across cultures
• Check the completion status of the Lesson: Explore The Culture map. It is set to Done.
• Check the completion status of the Wiki: Your personal notes wiki. It is set to Mark as done.

2. Login as Teacher at Site Demo Mount Orange School.

• Enter the course: Cross-cultural Communication.
• Go to Reports > Activity report.
• Mark as Complete the Wiki: Your personal notes wiki for student Barbara Gardner.
• Save Changes of the Confirm Message: «Are you sure you want to override the current completion state of this activity for this user and mark it "Completed"?»
• Mark as Not Complete the Lesson: Explore The Culture map for student Barbara Gardner.
• Save Changes of the Confirm Message: «Are you sure you want to override the current completion state of this activity for this user and mark it "Not completed"?»

In both cases, the checkbox of each activity completion status modified is show with a red border.

3. Login again as Student at Site Demo Mount Orange School.

• Enter the course: Cross-cultural Communication.
• Go to the section: Navigating communication styles across cultures

What is expected:

• Clearly identify, somehow, that teacher modified as To do the completion status of the Lesson: Explore The Culture map.
• Clearly identify, somehow, that teacher modified as Done the completion status of the of the Wiki: Your personal notes wiki.

What happens:

• There is no way students could identify what activity completion status has been overridden by the teacher, if any.

A plausible solution could be to display the now activity-completion-text-boxes with a red border as well.

💼 Teacher experience

When teachers override any completion status from the Activity Completion report, a confirmation modal is triggered. The UX proposal suggests adding a checkbox within the modal to notify students of the status change.

Teachers can decide whether to notify students, and considering the various scenarios where activities are marked completed on students' behalf, notifications may be unnecessary for changes from 'To-do' to 'Done', resulting in excessive alerts.

However, for changes from 'Done' to 'To-do', notifying students is crucial so they know they need to re-do the activity to complete the course.

🎓 Student experience

When teachers override the completion status of an activity and enable the 'Send notification to student' checkbox in the confirmation modal, students will see a warning icon next to the activity's completion status on the course page, indicating the change. On the activity page, they will see a detailed warning explaining the reason for the change.

Students will also receive a user notification to ensure this information is not missed. This improvement will be implemented in MDL-82025.
