UX: Define subsections availability behavior

XMLWordPrintable

    • HQ 2024 Sprint I2.3 Moppies

Subsections are controlled by activities and are inside parent sections. So, even though subsections should mirror sections availability, there are some scenarios that are new, and their behaviour should be defined.

      1. A subsection could be inside a hidden section. What should be the behaviour in this case? Is the subsection always hidden? Could the availability of the subsection be changed or not? How is it shown in the course page? And in the section page? What about the availability badge on edit mode? And the action menu?
      1. What's the behaviour when stealth activities are allowed at system level? Which are the options for the subsection in course page and section page? Is there any difference based on parent section's availability (hidden or shown)?

      UX proposal

      • Subsections should behave the same as sections in terms of availability settings, which means they will only have two states: visible or hidden.
      • The parent element (sections and subsections) will determine the availability of the content within.
      • When a subsection is inside a hidden section, the 'Show' option within the contextual menu should be disabled so users cannot change the settings of the subsection while the parent section is hidden.

      ➡️ Next steps

To determine if there is a genuine difficulty in distinguishing whether an availability setting originates from the parent element or the individual item’s settings, we will conduct an online survey in the next increment. This survey aims to quantify the number of users facing challenges with this issue.

The goal of the survey is to understand user expectations regarding the availability settings of course content within a parent element. Additionally, it seeks to determine whether a clear distinction between parent and child settings is necessary.
