Assignment grading in 4.5 is confusing

      Hello team,

Following the recent update of the Qualifications site to Moodle 4.5, I encountered challenges with the Assignment grading process, which I believe could cause confusion for other users as well. I’d like to share my experience and propose potential improvements to enhance clarity and usability.

      Challenges Identified:

      • Initially, I believed that selecting (via the checkbox in the first column) a user and clicking the Grade button would take me to the grading page for that specific individual. Instead, I was redirected to the grading interface with all users visible.
      • The distinction between the Search users box and Filter by name functionality was not immediately clear.
      • The Grade column contains three dots hiding the Grade action. It wasn’t obvious that this menu housed the grading option. The term "Grade" is used multiple times (button, column name, and menu action), which adds to the confusion.
      • As an editing teacher, I found the layout of the top menus unexpected. I had not realised that the View all submissions button was moved to the top under Submissions. While I understand this change improves efficiency once familiarised, the relocation was not immediately obvious during first use.

      Suggestions for Improvement:

      1. Use Assess or Evaluate instead of "Grade" for the verb, to distinguish it from the noun ("Grade" column). For example: Replace the Grade button with Assess all or Evaluate all.
      2. Replace the three dots (ellipsis menu) in the Grade column with a grading icon to signal where the grading action resides.
      1. Rename the Filter by name feature to Alphabet to better reflect its purpose.
      2. Perhaps move Advanced grading under the More menu in order to add Assessments or Evaluations next to Submissions ?

The new design allows for faster navigation once familiar, and consolidating options at the top instead of splitting them above and below the submissions table is beneficial. However, improving terminology and visual cues could make the grading process more intuitive for first-time users.
