It would be nice to have a translation memory in Amos - the Moodle translation interface.
A translation memory would build a list of suggestions for translations, based on how similar things that are translated in other parts of Moodle.
At the moment, the translation memory for Moodle is the combined memory of language pack maintainers who are responsible for keeping the the language pack consistent. This makes it difficult to deliver quality work for new translators and new language pack maintainers. Translation work is slowed down because of research to find out how something was translated in the past and because of making numerous corrections for consistency. Sometimes it is not realised that a term was used in the past, leading to inconsistent language use and eventually poor usability of the interface. This can all be avoided by using a translation memory.
Other online software translation tools have this feature:
- Weblate: https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/admin/memory.html
- Transifex: https://help.transifex.com/en/collections/3452916-translation-memory
to name a couple.
This old forum discussion: https://lang.moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=4098 has some ideas of how to create a translation memory outside Amos, but all methods are difficult to set up and maintain.
